Many of you may not know Adam. he is one the GPX original crew. So original that he actually started in my garage before the gym even opened. Adam started out of shape but with a goal. He came to me with that goal and willing to work for it. Even though Adam and his family now live in Turkey, he continues on a custom strength program that supports his endurance training. His gainz keep coming. Check out what he has to say.
I tried out CrossFit a few years ago and I really liked the concept. It was not until 2012 that I saw a sign that a new CrossFit gym would soon be opening in Gulfport. I went in to the yogurt shop where I met Tiffany. She told me of Pat Burgess and that he would soon be home from the military and opening up GPX. He called me a week later and two weeks later we started training in his garage. What an experience it has been! I was overweight, lacked mobility, was unhealthy, and was basically at a stagnant point in my life. I needed the change and structure that CrossFit would bring. I have changed gears a bit to more of an endurance based fitness program. I worked with GPX until April 2014, when my family and I relocated to Turkey, but still follow the GPX programming consistently. Coach Pat does an amazing job programming strength based endurance CrossFit while taking into consideration my other endurance training. The results I have seen using CrossFit are amazing.
I love the strength and mobility I have gained doing CrossFit. It has impacted so many other areas of my life including an increase in self confidence.
Since we no longer get to actually attend GPX, I can say that my favorite thing about GPX beyond the quality of coaching, had to be the community. There is something amazing about the support from others, while suffering together that makes us push harder than we ever thought possible. Change comes in the moments when your body says no, but you keep pushing through to the finish.
I am currently training for my first full Ironman Triathlon in Frankfurt Germany, July 2015.
If you had asked me my favorite workout or exercise 6 months ago, it would be no doubt jumping on a rower and just rowing. Short sprints, long endurance rows, I loved rowing. After hours and hours of rowing over the last several months, I am not so sure about my love of the rower.
My least favorite workout is Fran and thrusters are my least favorite exercise.
Scott has been a huge part of our GPX community. People know him as the “Gym Dad” . He is one the most welcoming individuals and always boosts those around him. His positivity is contagious. Since joining his grown leaps and bounds. He is the perfect mix of hard work, dedication, and the infamous “old man strength”. Scott is definitely a great athlete to workout with.
I was 54 years old when I first walked into GPX in 2014; fat, overweight, and barely able to do a pushup. I was an athlete in college and high school but that was a long time ago. Most of my time over the past 30 years had been spent sitting. It did not take long for me to fall in love with CrossFit and GPX. The coaches were welcoming. The other members were supportive of me, the old geezer in the group. My first few weeks was a struggle to even perform the basic moves. With coaching and practice I got better and better. As I improved, the workouts became more and more about seeing how good I can be. I competed a few times now and love to set new personal records. Joining GPX was a great decision. The payoff comes almost every day.
Every day is something different. The movements, the exercises, the WODs all change every day. Every movement has five or six variations that allow anyone to participate. Cant do a muscle up? DO a pull up. Can't do a pullup? Use an assistance band. Still too much? Do a ring row. .
We have a fantastic community. The members at GPX have become my extended family. We share hopes and dreams, triumphs and tragedies. The workouts are the real reason for the whole thing though. I compete with myself. I'm getting better, stronger, faster. I look better and feel better. The shared suffering of the WOD is strangely invigorating. It's also fun, sometimes, to let the beast come out in a rugged workout. The coaches are interested in me and my success. They push when they think I need to push and back off when the old guy needs some space
I am in better shape than I have been in 35 years. I think 55-year-old Scott to beat the crap out of 35-year-old Scott
I have enjoyed the competitions. I want to continue to improve my weightlifting techniques and skills. I am looking forward to competing in a few Olympic Weightlifting events. I have thoughts of coaching someday. .
Amber is known for kicking it up in the 5am class. She comes in ready to go every early morning. He progress has nothing short of awesome. She pushes hard and sets the bar high for the later classes. .
I entered the world of cross fit in Jan '14. My main reason was bc I needed something for me. I'm a busy single mom of two active kids. Eating on the run and late nights due to their sports had been a contributing factor to my weight gain. I'd seen a comment thru social media about a 5 am class that was offered by GPX. Having a trainer, a program to follow and classmates to help motivate me are something I truly needed. I've lost weight, increased strength, built muscle and best of all, developed a healthy fitness routine.
I enjoy finishing a wod that I thought would kill me...and doing surprisingly well!
GPX a has become a second family. It's my favorite way to start my day
Future goals are to focus on toning my problem areas and continue to build strength
Mike has been with GPX since nearly the beginning. he has grown over the years and been there through so many changes in the gym. His progress speaks for itself. He has lost significant weight and grown tremendously with the barbell. Mike came in simply to get healthy and found his niche with weight lifting and our supportive community
My name is Michael McMenamin. I'm 28 years old and I like long walks on the beach! LOL. Growing up i was always the "fat kid". As I got older I continued to be the "fat man". I first discovered CrossFit when I was working for Reebok. At the time Reebok had just became the number one sponsor for the Crossfit games. Something about it really intrigued me. One day I decided to check it out for myself and luckily for me Gulfport CrossFit had just opened up. After a brief conversation with Pat, I knew GPX was the place for me. There was just something about our conversation that made me feel like i could change the way I was. Since that talk on March 16th (yes i remember the exact date) my life has not been the same. I now go to Crossfit at least 4 days a week and couldn't be happier with the progress I have made. Crossfit have given me the confidence to succeed in anything I do.
What I enjoy most about Crossfit is the camaraderie between athletes.
there isn't just one thing I love more than another. The "box" is my escape. The coaches and athletes are my family!!!!
Crossfit Games CHAMPION!!! haha. Honestly to just be better than the day before. Maybe even become a Crossfit coach!
Erin came to GPX with previous CrossFit experience. She has a drive fitness and it shows with her training mentality and constant improvement. She is known for being one of the strongest female members in the gym and for often helping others. She also has a constant growing competition resume. We have seen her go through so many mental and physical changes over the last couple of years and we look forward to many more years of training and progress. .
I started Crossfit a few years back because I needed something to challenge me on a daily basis, push me to my limits,& clear my mind at the end of the day. I have always been an athlete and enjoyed the idea of working out and when a friend introduced Crossfit to me I instantly became addicted. I have come to realize over the last year how crucial your coach and programming relationship with you have everything to do with your gains and it has made me realize how much of a difference poor programming alone can set you back.I couldn't be happier with our coaches at GPX and their programming!
I love the positive energy and team mind set that comes along with Crossfit . I enjoy the mixture and challenges of all the workouts.
I love the fact that we all support one another and have a coaching staff that genuinely cares about each individuals progress and caters the workouts to you personally whether you have an injury, your just getting started or are going competitive.
My future goal would to be in the too three if either a team or individual competition and eventually get consistent muscle ups!
